Many merchants don't realize the important role they play in protecting their customer's credit card and personal information.  While it is required by law to truncate the credit card number and expiration date on the customer's copy of the receipt, did you know that it is legal in 44 states to display the full credit card number on the merchant's copy!  The six states that have passed legislation mandating credit card number truncation on both receipts are Colorado, Tennessee, California, Alaska, Nevada, and Washington State.
 
In a recent report published by Javelin Strategy and Research, 11.1 million people in the U.S. were affected by identity fraud in 2009.  In Javelin's study identity fraud is described as "the unauthorized use of another person's personal information to achieve illicit financial gain."  By not truncating credit card information merchants are exposing their customer's to potential identity fraud.
 
A perfect example of when a non-masked credit card number can be extremely risky for the customer is in a restaurant setting.  Once the customer's full credit card information is captured on the receipt and they leave the restaurant the customer is at risk.  A diner's credit card information can float around the restaurant and is available to be written down by anyone who comes in contact with the print out.

Merchants can always feel confident that they are protecting both themselves and their customers when using Mobilescape.  Credit card numbers are masked on all receipt copies and also in the transaction records stored on Mobilescape Manager.  If the merchant should ever run into a chargeback issue, a signed copy of the receipt, the transaction's auth code and the last four digits of the credit card number can be retrieved from Mobilescape Manager.  According to Visa regulations, these are the only three pieces of information that are needed to fight a customer chargeback.
